THE EAST ENDERS: JAZZ IN THE ERA OF ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

”The Five Spot Cafe on the Bowery was a gathering place that followed in the path of the Cedar Tavern in the late 1950s. “It was originally a bar,” said Mr. Watrous. “…From the get-go they hired people who were not as well known then as they are now, such as Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Cecil Taylor. The bar became a nexus for writers, artists, and musicians in a way that really hadn’t happened before, especially because of the exchange between black and white cultures there.”

”“The paintings that I love most have tension,” Ms. Egbert told The Star in 2007. “I’ll add and subtract and build up the surface of the canvas so that the color almost glows. They take time.”

”The wonderfully unbridled honesty in Sally Egbert is one of the many things that makes her so special”

HIROYUKI HAMADA: PAINTINGS

“For all these years, what I’m interested in as I make art remains mysterious and elusive. It is my yearning for freedom and my desire to fulfill my life as a human.”

”The process of painting is one of the most fascinating things for me. It’s a struggle to open myself, observe, and free elements as a cohesive dynamic or narrative emerging before me. I accept, affirm, and become one with the momentum to explore the process.”
