“Ms Richardson’s wooden shapes are organic to point of breathing, her more recent pieces rise weightless like seaweed from the ocean’s floor” Russell Drumm, East Hampton Star, 2009.

The natural world is the driving force behind Sally Richardson’s sculptures, which explore human and plant-like forms and their connection to nature. Using only hand tools (mallets, chisels and rasps), the artist carves both wood and stone. She approaches each piece of wood and block of stone with a reverence for its character and uniqueness. Throughout the subtractive carving process of each material—limestone, Carrara marble, local wood (mountain laurel, cherry and walnut) and totara (New Zealand native wood)—the artist imagines an inner life emerging from within.

Richardson grew up in a small coastal village in East Anglia, England, with a rich history of shipbuilding, fishing and maritime folklore. Both her father and grandfather worked aboard lighthouse ships in the North Sea shaping her strong connection to the sea and its traditions. For the past twenty years, she has lived and worked in Montauk, drawn to a familiar coastal history and a landscape that continues to inspire.

Sally Richardson (b. 1961 in East Anglia, England) received a BA from the Colchester School of Art, East Anglia, UK and studied sculpture at the Art Students League of New York. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, most recently at Stick and Stone Gallery, Amagansett, NY; Mabel and Victor D'Amico Studio and Archive, Amagansett, NY; Women’s Reunion Show, Ashawagh Hall, East Hampton, NY; Guild Hall Member Show, East Hampton, NY; and Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, Bridgehampton, NY.
